Tri-Cities, WA High School Senior Photographer | Photography Facebook Contest

I pinch myself every time because I get to do what I love! Being a professional photographer is my dream job and am so lucky to be able to do it!  The one thing no one tells you about is the behind the scenes that makes a successful photography business. The book keeping, client management, branding, packaging, work flow and the list goes on and on. Not to mention the big M word – Marketing! I don’t know about you, but I didn’t go to business school. So trying to come up with successful marketing strategies is like changing your outfit 4 times a day (yeah I do that – sometimes 😉 ) As a high school senior photographer, I am always looking for the latest and the greatest everything, from clothing trends to social media updates. Let’s face it, we are in a time where Facebook is the most inexpensive way to advertise and market our business. The key to Facebook is having a large fan base and high engagement posts . The more people you reach, the closer you are to reaching your target market.

I decided to create a contest that would do just that – create more “likes” for my page and engage more people. I started by writing down the purpose of the contest with clear expectations and goals. I also checked out Facebook do’s and don’t to make sure I was creating a contest within their guidelines. You can read about them HERE.

I wanted to target the high school crowd. So what do high schoolers want besides money and clothes? To have an amazing photography experience with their friends all while looking like a ROCKSTAR! I decided to offer a “PROM/HOMECOMING” mini session since it’s almost time for Prom around here. That means high school boys are thinking about who they’re going to ask and girls are thinking or have bought a Prom dress. It’s on their minds. This whole contest did not cost me anything except my time. Once I figured out what I would offer along with contest rules and a deadline, I created a post on Facebook.

The post said the following: See the original Post by Photography by Galicia.

***CONTEST TIME***
All you HIGH-SCHOOLERs out there I want to see those homecoming/prom dresses! Send a photo of you in your homecoming or prom dress, name and what high school you attend to photographybygalicia@gmail.com or through facebook messenger. It doesn’t have to be fancy, a simple phone pic will do too.

Once I post your photo, tag yourself and share it with your friends and family! They must like Photography by Galicia facebook page as well as your image for it to count.

The contest will end Monday, March 17th at midnight. The photo with the most likes will win a PROM/HOMECOMING Mini Session with 4 of your friends. Included are digital images, personalized digital APP(s) and print release.

I will also giveaway a complementary spring mini session to a random “liker” on the winning photo!

Get your photo in ASAP and start racking up those “likes”!

The reason I wanted them to submit a picture is because an image creates a more engaging post than just a text post. Plus the owner of the image can tag themselves in the post to reach their friends and they can share the post to their wall. Once I received their image, either Facebook message or email, I would post their image with the following text.

NAME | SCHOOL

LIKE PHOTOGRAPHY BY GALICIA (make sure you use the @ before your page name, it will link it) and this image to help NAME win a Prom/Homecoming Mini Session with her friends!

I would post their images as I received them.  I contacted them by message or email letting them know I posted their picture and to remind them to tag themselves. I also reminded them that their friends had to like my page and the image posted on my wall for their votes to count.

I’m so ecstatic of the results!!!! I had 23 girls enter the contest, 367 new fans, 6 inquiries and 4 bookings for senior fall sessions.  The contest completely blew up my social media! Woot! Woot!

Charisma - Thanks for this blog post Galicia! I’m wanting to run a “back to school” or “homecoming” contest or something similar and just trying to find ideas on how to go about it.

What advice would you give or additional steps might you use if you wanted to get both instagram and fb followers through the same contest and did you have to follow any “fb rules” when posting the contest?

Have you run any contests since last March and if so.. have you done anything differently that helped boost it even more?

Thank you so much for any advice and for sharing your ideas! xoxo

PS.. I signed up for your VIP list and I’m pretty sure that was meant for your seniors/teens only. It popped up and so I just signed away without even thinking about it! lol oops!
