As an entrepreneur or small business owner, you know that the list of things “to-do” is about a mile long. We are passionate about what we do, how we do it, and because of this, there is often one thing at the end of the list: us. We forget about self care. So, I decided to focus on LOVE this month (yes, it’s a coincidence that it happens to be February, the month of love).
I challenged other photographers to do the same thing: practice intentional self love and self care. I committed to do at least one thing each day to take care of myself or show myself love. The simplest of things that I did, always made a difference. A lot of it didn’t cost money, it was as simple as giving myself time. I took time for myself to do little things like paint my nails, go for a quick walk, or even (don’t laugh) getting dressed in ‘real clothes’. It’s totally normal to see me in sweat pants and a t-shirt with my hair in bun.
Then, I decided to really take it up a notch by doing 4 things consistently this month.
To read:: I read The Magnolia Story. If you don’t know about Chip & Joanna Gaines and their show on HGTV, it’s a must-watch. I have seen every episode, and you can’t help but fall in love with them. This book was so great to read and made me love them even more. They share their struggles, their love story and personal insights that they learned along the way. I couldn’t put it down that I read it in one day. It’s a must read. Get your copy here >>> http://amzn.to/2lfS1OK
To eat better:: At the beginning of the month, I joined a subscription service called, Fresh20. Each week, you receive a weekly meal plan with the recipes, and grocery list. The best part is that it’s all fresh food and under 20 ingredients. I am currently using the Classic and Paleo recipes. So, on Saturday or Sunday, I head to the grocery store and purchase what I need for the week. This has helped me cook more, be healthier, and save money.
To be healthy:: Nothing better to motivate you than a summer vacation scheduled. My hubby and I are headed to Italy in June. I’m sooo excited. So naturally, I wanted to feel good about my body and also to be able to enjoy myself without having to be out of shape. I decided to work out. I know. At first, I was like a child sprawled out on the floor, kicking and screaming, not wanting to go but knowing I needed to go. My hubby rolled his eyes at me each time and said “Galicia, let’s go NOW!” Then I would gather my gym bag and go. I would thank him every time when we left the gym for making me go. Of course, I have gotten better. I actually look forward to going. We have this routine that ends up in the hot tub and the steam room. It really is a relaxing way to end a workout. Try it!
Take a REAL day off:: Even tho I am a #girlboss, every now and then you need a day off. I get asked all the time what I do since I am not actively shooting right now. I can tell you that I don’t sit around eating bon bons all day. Most photographers around this time of year are busy revamping and getting things in order for the coming year among many other things. It’s usually an overhaul of everything. I decided to take one day off during each month, during the week to do what I want. I went through my calendar and marked an x on a day for each month. I blocked it out on my iCal too. That way it’s scheduled. This month I met up with a couple ladies who are entrepreneurs too and talked shop over coffee, which I enjoyed. Doing these things helped me refocus and prevent burnout. That in turn makes me a better business owner and photographer!
So I pass the challenge over to you, what do you do to show yourself love and self care?
